Parents, are you looking for ways to enhance your child's reading ability and comprehension skills?
Here are some helpful tips to support your child's reading journey: Encouraging critical thinking and meaningful discussions with these thought-provoking tips.š”
Explore characters, themes, and messages hidden within the pages of books! Asking
questions deepens children's understanding of a text and encourages them to evaluate it in more detail and gain a love of reading. š
1ļøā£ Introduce inference: Inference is the ability to draw conclusions or make educated guesses based on the information given. Encourage your child to go beyond the literal meaning of the text and think critically about the characters' feelings, motivations, or events that might happen next. Discussing these ideas together can strengthen their inference skills.
2ļøā£ Ask open-ended questions: Instead of simply asking your child factual questions, encourage them to think deeper by asking open-ended questions. For example, instead of asking "What color was the character's hat?" you could ask, "Why do you think the character chose to wear that particular hat?"
3ļøā£ Visualise the story: Help your child create mental images of the story as they read. Visualising the characters, settings, and events can enhance their comprehension and make the text more engaging. Encourage them to describe what they see in their mind's eye.
4ļøā£ Make connections: Encourage your child to relate the story to their own experiences or other books they've read. Making connections helps them understand the text better and deepens their comprehension.
5ļøā£ Predict and confirm: Encourage your child to make predictions about the story's outcome or what might happen next. After reading, discuss if their predictions were accurate or how the actual events differed. This helps them develop anticipation and critical thinking skills.
6ļøā£ Read aloud and discuss: Reading aloud together allows you to model reading strategies and engage in meaningful discussions about the text. Encourage your child to ask questions, share their thoughts, and explore different interpretations.
