What Is a Diagnostic Assessment?

Full diagnostic assessments identify dyslexia and literacy-based specific learning difficulties in children aged 8 to 16.

These assessments provide a detailed understanding of your child’s strengths and challenges, along with tailored recommendations to support learning both at home and at school.

What Does the Assessment Involve?

Duration: Approximately 2½ hours, including short breaks.
Activities: A range of child-friendly tasks assessing:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Spelling

  • Memory

  • Cognitive and phonological processing
    Each task is short and engaging, with no individual task lasting more than 15 minutes.

 What’s Included?

  • Pre-assessment consultation and background questionnaire (including 10-point visual screening)

  • Optional school input

  • A full in-person assessment in Hawkhurst

  • A comprehensive report (provided within 2 -3 weeks) accepted by schools and exam boards

  • A follow-up feedback session to explain the results and next steps

📍 Location

Assessments take place at:
Sir Thomas Dunk’s Schoolroom, Dunk’s Hall, Hawkhurst, Kent
The venue offers:

  • A calm, child-friendly space

  • Access to toilet and kitchen facilities

  • A fridge for drinks/snacks

  • A quiet environment to help your child feel at ease

🎓 Recognised by Universities and Workplaces

Your child’s diagnostic report is written by an APC-registered assessor (AMBDA accredited), making it suitable for:

  • Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) for Higher Education

  • Access to Work support for future employment

  • Driving theory test reasonable adjustments

The Department for Education (DfE) confirms that a diagnosis of dyslexia at any age is valid for DSA, provided the assessor holds a current APC at the time of assessment.

💷 Cost and Payment

The full diagnostic assessment is £550, which includes:

  • Pre-assessment consultation

  • Full assessment session

  • Detailed diagnostic report (returned within 14 days)

  • Feedback session

Full payment is required to secure the booking and is non-refundable.
In special circumstances, a payment plan may be agreed — but the full balance must be cleared at least 14 days before the assessment.
